Ukraine and Russia have successfully completed one of the most significant prisoner exchanges since the escalation of hostilities amidst the ongoing conflict. On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the return of 189 Ukrainians, comprising military personnel and civilians, as part of an agreement brokered by the United Arab Emirates. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the release of the exchanged prisoners, stating that 150 Russian soldiers were returned alongside the same number of Ukrainians. However, a discrepancy arose in the number of prisoners returned as Ukraine reported a higher total. The Russian personnel were reportedly freed on Belarusian territory, where they received psychological and medical assistance before their return to Russia for further treatment and rehabilitation.

Zelensky, celebrating the homecoming on social media, expressed that the return of citizens from Russian captivity is invariably great news. Although reports from various sources differ slightly, the essence remains the same: a substantial number of Ukrainian military members, including defenders of Azovstal and Mariupol, have been freed. Among those released are soldiers, non-commissioned officers, and two civilians who were captured during the sieges in 2022.

The Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters detailed that many captives had spent more than two and a half years in challenging conditions, enduring chronic illnesses and severe injuries incurred during military operations.
