A tragic event unfolded off the coast of Hurghada, a popular Red Sea resort city in Egypt, when a tourist submarine met a devastating fate, resulting in the deaths of six tourists. The submarine, operated by the Sindbad Hotel, was on a routine excursion aimed at showcasing the region's renowned coral reefs. Tragically, among those who perished, four were confirmed to be Russian citizens, as reported by the Russian Consulate in Hurghada. There were 45 individuals on board, predominantly Russian tourists, with some crew members hailing from India, Norway, and Sweden. Governor Amr Hanafi of the Red Sea province confirmed the death toll, which included the Russian tourists Ravil and Kristina Valiullin, a married couple who were both doctors visiting from the region of Tatarstan.

The submarine embarked on its journey around 10 a.m. local time, intended as a recreational trip to explore the breathtaking coral formations. However, it sank approximately one kilometer from the shore. While initial reports indicated the successful rescue of 29 passengers, four remained unaccounted for, as rescue teams worked tirelessly to save as many lives as possible.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the submarine's sinking. Allegations have surfaced regarding potential operator negligence, citing an error by one of the submarine pilots who reportedly steered into a coral reef, leading to the catastrophic breach of the vessel's hull, causing it to overturn and flood. Moreover, prior complaints from tourists about the submarine's poor condition have come to light, including issues with its ventilation system and concerns about safety protocols.

The Sindbad submarine was one of only 14 recreational submarines operating worldwide. Through its panoramic portholes, passengers could enjoy an immersive view of the underwater world. This, however, wasn't the first maritime mishap in the region. Previous incidents have included the capsizing of a tourist boat named the Sea Story, resulting in multiple casualties, and highlighted ongoing safety concerns associated with maritime tourism in the Red Sea.
